The conclusion of an essay is as important as the introduction, with the two paragraphs considered the essay’s figurative “bookends.” While the first paragraph introduces the topic and makes a claim, the conclusion of an essay looks back at the claim with the benefit of supporting details, and shows how the point of the essay was made. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the personal statement or admissions essay is just another part of the application. If you simply jot down a few sentences about who you are and why you want to be a pharmacist and then call it good, you’ll probably earn nothing more than rejection. Similarly, if you write an essay that is little more than a resume in essay form, you won’t have provided any new information that helps your reader get to know you as a unique individual. If you do not know what led you to pursue pharmacy, or you find that studying pharmaceuticals is not that captivating, you should stop here.  Pharmacy school, along with post-graduate courses, is a laborious path, and if you are applying to this program just to please your parents or to deal with some external pressure, you will find yourself unhappy later down the road. Make sure your choice to attend is your own and not the decision of someone else. Hopefully, after reading this far, you now acknowledge the upsides and the downsides of this profession.

Examine your motivation for wanting to become a pharmacist. Pharmacy school admission committees will be extremely interested in your motivation. You need to clearly define your motivation within the scope of your essay, so make sure that it is clear before you start. Potential motivations can include such things as a desire to help others or the opportunity to pursue advanced research that may affect the pharmaceutical industry or medical industry as a whole. Include in your list life and academic experiences that have shaped you as a student and as a person. These will help authenticate your essay by helping the committee make the connection between you, the writer, and you, the person.

When some students hear the word “essay” they may feel a little intimidated, but writing an essay doesn’t have to be scary at all. Essays take many forms, from answering a question on an exam to drafting a formal persuasive piece. Learning the basic format of an essay and practicing often helps students feel more confident when it’s time to write.

The admissions committee has to slog through numerous essays that will probably sound alike. You have to grab the committee’s attention. Just keep in mind that there are negative ways to grab an admissions committee’s attention, and there are positive ways. On the negative end of the spectrum, you could write an essay that has spelling and grammatical errors from the get go or that makes offensive remarks. On the positive end of the spectrum, you can write an essay that leads with an interesting anecdote, a thought-provoking quote about pharmacy, or memories of what first inspired you to pursue this profession.

Just like in a job interview, tell the admissions officer why you are someone they want at their school, not just someone that wants to be at their school. You need to high-light your skills and show the school you have the ambition to learn what they can teach you.
